Object 5 user reviews: Summary: It is what it is! Written on 2006-03-02 The reason a designer would buy this book is why a designer buys any book with sample designs - to give some new and fresh ideas and or get you out of a creative rut.
I don't design many invitations or correspondence, but when I have the chance to, you better believe that I use this book for referance. It can be used for referance just from a layout and typography element. Again, if your looking for a creative injection, this is a good book to own. Summary: Cool book! Written on 2006-01-27 Overall, this book is interesting because it has many great concept designs, but there are some too crafty designs. Summary: Very little variation for a '1000 Greetings' Written on 2005-08-25 I was disappointed with this book as the majority of cards are Christmas related and a lot of them are from the same contributers. There is some nice stuff in there but with 1000 'greetings' I had hoped for A LOT more variation and not all American but International cards. Summary: so much fun Written on 2004-12-09 I absolutely love this book; even though as a designer I don't do much card/invitation design, the typography and graphic elements are still inspiring in my everyday work. It makes for a fun coffee table book as well. Summary: Informative Book Written on 2004-11-02 As a graphic designer, I find this book full of inspiration. When I am at a creative blank I can just refer to this book and new ideas are instantly created. Images in this book are clear and crisp, despite what the previous reviewer said, I personally find these images large enough to see how intricate and detailed the work is and how they are administered. A wonderful book! |

Object 4 user reviews: Summary: Finding the Right Words: Perfect Phrases to Personalize Your Greeting Cards Written on 2006-03-01 This book is a treasure - very useful for 'just the right touch'. Summary: Finding the Right Words: Perfect Phrases Written on 2005-08-08 A fabulous mind jogger. I'm handed cards and asked to scribe brief notes regarding births, losses, promotions, illness, recovery, and the whole range of ups and downs. This book is great for starting the creative juices going and suggesting a phrase or quote that helps me express my feelings. You will NOT regret the purchase. Summary: Finding the Right Words: Perfect Phrases to Personalize Your Greeting Cards Written on 2005-07-21 I have used this book on many occasions to enhance my writing. Summary: Nice Collection of Phrases, But... Written on 2004-12-22 This (very) little book contains ideas for personalizing cards for 30 occasions. The categories run the gamut from frequent occasions such as birthdays or thank you notes, to the rarer events like retirements and new homes. Each occasion has a page or two of short sentences to help you express your sentiments.
This book will not really help you write longer notes, or letters; but it is perfect for adding something personal to a ready-made greeting card. The last 40 or so pages are devoted to space for you to keep track of birthdays, anniversaries and Christmas/ Hanukkah/ Kwanzaa card lists. Without those pages, this would be more of a pamphlet than a book. I would have preferred more content instead of space for lists that I keep on my computer.
I like the idea of customizing greeting cards, and I'm sure I'll use the phrases in this book to jump-start my notes. However, if I had leafed through it in a store, I'm not sure I would have bought it. |

Object 5 user reviews: Summary: Expected more Written on 2005-11-04 Actually I expected more from this book. Unfortunately, when buying it, I did not realize that it is so thin (not even 100 pages). Maybe it is OK for a total beginner in this crafts... Summary: Great source of inspiration! Written on 2005-10-01 I really loved all the projects in the book. They are elegant, wonderful. They are not described step by step, what could make it a little difficult for begginers to follow, but results are marvelous. Summary: Simple yet elegant designs Written on 2005-07-28 I really liked the cards designed by Claire Sun-Ok Choi even though as one reviewer mentioned almost all the cards are square. I bought this book after I had seen it in my library and liked the projects. The methods used are simple, well described and accompanied with step by step pictures. In other words, instructions are clear and understandable. Summary: it has potential... Written on 2004-12-30 I received this book as a Christmas gift. There are lots of pretty and delicate designs in the book and I like how the author finds many different uses for a few basic embellishments however every card in the book is a 5"x5" card - the dimensions/scale are planned for square cards as opposed to rectangular cards. I also thought more illustrations would have been helpful in some cases. I don't think a beginner card maker would find this book very helpful. Summary: Techniques ranging from paper quilling, cutting and piecing Written on 2004-08-10 Sixty lovely hand-made card ideas for all occasions are covered in Claire Sun-Ok Choi's Designing Handcrafted Cards, a guide to techniques ranging from paper quilling, cutting and piecing to layering and using photos in cards. The use of simple materials - often no more than card stock paper and tools on hand - lends to the final production of a personalized masterpiece following the techniques outlined in Designing Handcrafted Cards.

Object 5 user reviews: Summary: Cards That Pop-Up, Fliip & Slide Written on 2006-03-10 Great book, although I found some of the instructions a bit tricky. Overall the book is very imformative on the different ways to make some interesting cards. Summary: A fun book Written on 2006-03-08 There are numerous books available on making cards. They tend to rehash the sentimental, cutsie attitude towards card making. This book is different. It concentrates more on the structure of the card. It is beautifully presented with clear photographs and instructions. Fun for all ages and skill levels. Summary: Only a few good ideas Written on 2005-12-20 Quite a detailed book but the cards are very basic and in some instances....i hate to say it....but they look quite amateurish.
There are a couple of good ideas, (pedestal card and triptych card), but overall I was dissapointed. Cards need to look good as they come out of the envelope, when stood up on display and when popping up, flipping and sliding.
If novelty cards are your thing then I strongly sugest getting hold of a copy of surprisingly simple novelty cards. Summary: Something Missing Written on 2005-12-09 Maybe I just have a little more card making experience than the others who loved this book; I don't know. I like the idea of cards that are more than just a folded piece of card stock with a picture. I like an element of surprise or delight, such as a pop-up or a hidden pocket with something else inside. I've been looking for new ideas for just what the title advertises--cards that pop-up, flip, and slide. While there were a few ideas in here that were somewhat unusual, on the whole I found this to be a fair and uninspiring book. It feels like there's something missing. The examples of the cards are, for the most part, not terribly attention grabbing or appealing. Some of the artwork even looks amateurish. After flipping through this several times, there wasn't really a picture of a card in here that made me want to pause and learn more. It was a disappointment. If you've never made cards before, this might help you out. However, there are more interesting and inspiring books on card making out there. I didn't get much from this that will add to my card making techniques. Not worth the price for me. Summary: Fun book to inspire creativity Written on 2005-08-30 This book has so many cool, fun ideas whether you are making cards or scrapbooking. This one book has volumes of information with easy to follow instructions. It's a must have book! |

Object 4 user reviews: Summary: disappointed Written on 2006-02-25 I was disappointed in the lack of helpful pertintant information in this book. It seemed to be geared to someone(a child perhaps) that didn't know to "gather pencils and paper to write" I can honestly say I found NOTHING helpful in this little book to help me on my journey toward writing for greeting card cmpanies. Summary: An Interesting Potential Market Written on 2004-01-16 Now here's something you may not have considered writing ... greeting card messages. Just pause to think for a moment how many cards there are in gift shops, newsagencies, department stores etc. Squillions of 'em ... and someone has to write all the verses in them! Why not you? Patrisha Stauss has been doing this for a number of years and has written an informative little booklet that explains how to go about researching the market, contacting publishers and protecting your rights. She also emphasises the importance of taking a professional approach to your writing. After all, if you hope to support your brood of starving children or keep your spoilt furred, finned and feathered friends in the manner to which they have become accustomed, you need to adopt a business-like attitude. Many of the tips Patrisha gives in her book Freelance Writing for Greeting Card Companies would apply to any type of writing, not just greeting cards. She gives a list of the basic equipment you need to set up as a professional writer and some of the ongoing costs associated. Things we tend to overlook like paper, ink cartridges, discs and then visits from your friendly, local 'puter doctor. Because greeting card verses and messages are brief, you need to submit multiple ideas to publishers, so you really need to have a foolproof system to keep track of your submissions, and Patrisha has some practical ways you can do this in her book. Summary: Excellent Freelance Advice Written on 2001-04-09 The book helped me to better understand what is expected of editors &/or greeting card companies. The material in the book was well organized. It helped me to get more organized within the realm of preparing my work for the market. This is a good business type book to get one started in pursuing a possible career in writing for greeting card companies. I found it to be very informative and recommend it to anyone who plans to be a freelance writer for greeting cards. Summary: Useful Knowledge Written on 1999-11-22 I found this book well-written and by & large, accurate. Other books I've found helpful have been Molly Wigand's and especially a new book out by Sandra Miller-Louden, called Write Well & Sell: Greeting Cards. Armed with any of these books, a "newbie" can certainly break into the business of card writing. |

Summary: The best artistic book for making cards with rubber stamps. Written on 2005-10-07 This book makes cards making with rubber stamps real ART. The cards are very Uniqe and the instructions are easy to follow. Summary: Not for the Advanced Stamper... Written on 2003-02-16 This is an excellent book if you are looking for ideas on how to better make use of rubber stamps in an interesting and intriguing way with greeting cards. If you are VERY experienced at that, this book is not for you. That is not to say this is for beginners either. It is for someone who wants to do "cooler" things with cards and rubber and ink, but doesn't want to take all day to do it. Summary: Fabulous Book!! A must have for all levels of stampers!! Written on 2002-02-15 Thanks for another great book Mary Jo! The book covers very artistic methods that can be applied to any level of stamping. The instructions with pictures are very easy to understand. It also has a great index, definitions of items used, and a helpful resource of where to buy the items used in the book. Summary: Greeting Card Magic with Rubber Stamps Written on 2001-04-11 I found this book chalk full of ideas and different methods that can be used to make unique and beautiful cards. It was just what I was looking for! I have already been inspired to try out these new techniques. I found it very helpful and easy to understand. |

Object 5 user reviews: Summary: Great, easy art! Written on 2004-06-08 I like crafting very much. Greeting cards hold an especially dear place in my heart and I love to make them constantly. Just about everyone I know has received at least one homemade greeting card from me at one time or another. So yes, I'm always on the lookout for new books on the subject. This one, I have to say, is great! It has innovative projects rnaging from the colorful, really creative ones to subtler, more elegant ones. There really is one for everyone and the instructions are very clear, detailed and, simple to follow. No crafter, regardless of skill, will have any trouble completing any of these cards. The authors did a great job of writing this book. Also worthy is the creative use of rather unusual materials (for a card at least). I've been working with paper for a long time now and it still helped move some things inside of me which helped me come up with a whole set of new ideas on how to work and what to do. The pictures are great, you'll enjoy them and they'll inspire you to create some new, totally different projects of your own. This is one book you'll definitely enjoy. Summary: Not just cards, not just rubberstamping. Written on 2004-03-17 Not that there'd be anything wrong with a book being "just" about either subject, but this one in particular by McGraw happens to transcend the information on the cover as well as the niche one might casually file it away in. If I had to break it down into one word, I'd say this book is about alchemy. Taking common materials beyond the limit of their accepted potential. Embossing powders transform into precious minerals and mysterious artifacts. Inks do things most people hadn't considered they could before. Embellishments that might seem old-hat are given a surprising new aesthetic status in the context McGraw places them. I hate that this looks like a greeting cards book. It's an ART book, darnit. Summary: Cards redefined as artistic masterpieces to give or keep Written on 2004-03-12 The first word that came to mind when I saw the projects in Making Greeting Cards with Creative Materials was "artsy". The next word was "collage". I think those two concepts neatly sum up the style and involvement level you can expect from this multimedia craft book.Author MaryJo McGraw is clearly an experienced artist who has explored many techniques, but whose first love is obviously the paper arts. Although this is a book on greeting cards, there were a lot of projects that would work on a different scale for other purposes, such as embellishing scrapbooks; and many of them could be frame able art in their own right. The designs and color choices reflect rich, muted tones and multilayers of materials such as fibers, charms, gold leaf, wires, inks, watch pebbles, beads, punches, stamped papers and photos. Often the card shapes and closures are not the standard rectangular format. The processes are carefully explained and illustrated as though to first-timers, but the results will make you look like a terribly sophisticated artist. If you're hoping for ideas that would make for good quantity mailings such as invitations, be aware that most people would probably not have the time or money to make these cards in bulk: these are complex labors of love that are definitely not suited to mass production. Never once did I read a suggestion that the reader purchase ready-made embellishments or stickers, because the emphasis here is on handcrafting rather than time efficiency. For the crafter who has special, personal sentiments to express however, these are the ideal medium for that individual touch to the recipient. -Andrea, aka Merribelle Summary: Good for Beginners Written on 2004-02-26 This book is an excellent starting place for skill building. Summary: Grandslam Written on 2002-07-02 I don't know how the woman does it, but MaryJo McGraw has produced another winner. One might think that by the fourth book, her ideas and designs might be repetitive, but McGraw's latest foray into the seemingly overly crowded subject of "greeting cards" shows that the well is still quite full. The title says it all and the paper artist/craftsperson who is looking to expand their skill and designs they will be pleased with the concepts that McGraw presents in this well illustrated and clearly written guide. She takes you beyond rubber stamps and beyond cute...many of the designs are just downright art but on a smaller canvas. More than a few of the cards are just...well, they are just too cool for words. If you want to make cards just out of your rubber stamps, don't buy this book. If you want to expand your creative possibilities and make cards out of some very interesting stuff, then you should buy this book. If you want to make greeting cards that are "oh, so sweet" don't buy this book. If you want to make greeting cards (or adapt the designs for other paper arts projects) that will knock the socks off the recipient then buy this book right now. |
